RECIPE: black bean brownie bites

Morning everyone,

I have been so excited about this post!

BLACK BEAN BROWNIE BITES are the most delicious healthy snack ever.

Sorry it has taken me so long to post this, I just wanted to put my own twist on a recipe I found to make it even more scrummmmy.

Clean eating does not have to be boring - we all need some treats in our life. This is certainly better than reaching for some sweets or chocolate bars (as I would usually do or should I say used to do!)

These are so easy and so tasty... you wouldn't believe they're not normal brownies! Promise.

Ingredients
Black Beans - 1 19 oz can / 1 & 3/4 cup - rinse well and drain.
Unsweetened almond milk (which I love even though I don't like nuts really) - 1/4 cup
Maple syrup - 1/3 cup
Cocoa powder - 3/4 cup
Ground almonds - 1/4 cup
Eggs - 2
Pitted dates - small handful; about 4
Unsweetened applesauce - 2 tbsp
Vanilla extract - 1 tsp
Baking powder - 1 & 1/2 tsp
Salt - 1/2 tsp
Dark Chocolate chips - 1/3 cup (or less but no more!)

Method
Prep
First, preheat the oven to about 175 degrees C.
Then grease your tin (with coconut oil / non-stick spray or other alternatives).
Mixture
Combine the black beans and the almond milk in a blender/food processor.
When this is smooth, add the maple syrup, dates, eggs, applesauce and vanilla extract - blend again for about 30 seconds until all ingredients are combined.
In a separate bowl combine the rest of the ingredients (you'll notice these are the dry ingredients).
Then slowly incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet until it is all well combined.
Sprinkle in the dark chocolate chips in by hand.
Add the batter into the tin and smooth it all out.
To finish
Bake for 30 minutes.
Then remove the tin from oven and let it cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting them up.

Makes about 30-40 bites (depending on the size and thickness you do but I recommend small for nibbles). You can store them in a container in the fridge for several days.

My boyfriend loves them straight out the oven but I think there so much nicer after they have been in the fridge for a few hours (and I'm sure they kept getting nicer and nicer as time went on!)

Enjoy!

& let me know what you think if you make them.

Jess x

PS. don't be put off by the horrible smell of the black beans - they taste nice honest!

Day 26 - fitness journey

Good morning everyone,

How are you all getting on with your fitness journeys? Please don't hesitate to message me whenever, I love hearing from you all.

My journey is going well so far - although I'm not entirely sure what is working for me and what isn't just at the moment as I have changed so much of my diet already...

From the little things; like having water in my porridge instead of milk (which I used to do sometimes but not every day – I have no idea why) and also just having a glass of water when I wake up instead of going straight for breakfast.

To the bigger things; like not eating chocolate or biscuits but creating healthy alternatives (which for me at the moment is so essential as I have such a sweet tooth). I used to think when I was a bit hungry I may as well go for a biscuit (which turned into 10 biscuits) as there is nothing healthy I fancied in the house but now I know I just need to keep lots of healthy snacks around so I don’t grab the super unhealthy ones (duh). My black bean brownie bites recipe will be on the blog tomorrow and I will be posting loads more recipes as time goes on.

I do generally eat healthy but I have never really cared that much about what I am eating – until now. So here continues my fitness journey and begins my true ‘lean’ journey.

Inspiration and motivation

I can’t thank blogger Lauren Gleisberg enough for her support – she posts so many workout routines, including ones which you can do at home (I haven't done any myself yet because I go to the gym a lot but I plan to fit them into my schedule soon) oh and she also posts recipes… all for free. She replied to questions on her blog and she also answered my email (which I never expected) so make sure to check her out and follow her for inspiration; here is her blog link - all her other social media links are on there; which I follow so I’m motivated no matter what social media website I am on.

I must also mention the body coach who I follow on all platforms as well – he posts great recipes; although not in detail but it inspires me to try stuff out and on his website you can get his free get lean guide – he does offer a 90 day plan but for me that’s too expensive – I think we can all to it together without spending a fortune.

There are so many ‘eat clean and lean’ accounts on Instagram but do be careful who you believe as there is a lot of rubbish out there as well.

But don’t let people get out down about it though either – we are all learning and aren’t perfect. Everyone's body and goals are different! Don't forget that.

Your Tea

Hi everyone,

So after Christmas and then the flu, I decided I needed a little help in kick starting my healthy living. What better way than a little detox... Or teatox I should say.

I always try to be healthy and as some of you will know I am posting my fitness journey on here so join me! But after having the flu for so long I need a bit of help to stop me reaching for the chocolate bars when I'm feeling rubbish.

I absolutely love tea so this was the one for me.

I have done a few other detoxes in the past, all of which have worked (I can review some others if you want - let me know in the comments below) but after finding my passion of healthy eating I realise I don't need a huge detox plan, I just need a little nudge to put me back on track.

Now these teatoxes have suddenly become so popular. I have no idea why in particular - but I love herbal tea so I had to give it a try.

I looked at lots of brands, such as Bootea, and I really did my homework on deciding which to go with - but I felt Your Tea was more what I was looking for.

Firstly, it comes in tea bags so I didn't need to spend more money buying a tea strainer.

Secondly, it has no 'bedtime' tea with specific laxative effects (unlike Bootea - I read some disturbing reviews on their bedtime tea).

Thirdly, you don't need to specifically change your diet and give up meat or anything as Bootea's teatox suggests you do (I eat well generally so a meal plan was not something I was specifically interested in and I love meat so that would have been an issue).

They do provide a free eating plan here if you needed a little guidance - which is always useful.

Their website which I linked above is so helpful - they have all the FAQ's posted so you can read up on it without much effort at all.

I spoke to someone on the 'live chat' who could not have been more helpful. I was very impressed and would recommend the brand to anyone so far.

I had my first tea bag this morning and it does smell strange but I absolutely love the taste - I may try adding lemon and honey one day just to try it out but I think personally, as an avid tea lover, it tastes great just on its own.

Your Tea offers so many different ranges so I will be interested to see how this works and if anyone has tried any of their others?

This 14 day teatox I am trying (this box is 28 day but my friend also wanted to try it out) claims to...

Specifically designed to assist with:
  • bloating
  • indigestion
  • problematic skin
  • cellulite
  • increase energy
  • reduction of excess weight
  • increase energy

So come back in 14 days and I will tell you what I thought of the teatox.

Has anyone else tried a teatox?

Primark SS15 Shoes

Hi everyone,

The Primark SS15 shoes are out!

I so recommend you go check them out, I could have brought at least 15 pairs! It was so hard to resist them all... but in the end I chose two;

1)

These are my absolute favourite! They are going to be perfect when the warmer weather comes back, I will make sure to do some styling with them in a couple months.

They had a few pairs in this style which I absolutely love... Comfy enough to wear all day but really pretty (and girly) and also with a little height = the perfect shoe!

I thought the colours on these ones are beautiful and will go with so much I own. But they do have similar in plain black and white if that's more your thing.

And guess what? ...they were only £14!!!  What a bargain - especially when you know a similar shoe will be £40 - £60 in River Island.

2)

I also got these babies which are only £3!!! So perfect for lounging around the pool on holiday. They come in loads of amazing colours... it was a tough one for me between this mint colour, purple and pink! They were all so nice.

Let me know if you get any and what your favourites are!

I think in the last year Primark have just got so much better. I may do another Primark Haul video as I did spend a lot again! But if you follow me on instagram I will be posting pictures over the next few weeks as well!

RECIPE: homemade pasta sauce

Hi everyone,

I don't know about you but I get so bored with just having tins of tomatoes as a sauce for half my dinners so I thought I would use my blender and create a more exciting (but still healthier than buying a pre-made version) pasta sauce.

I virtually made this recipe up, by using things I love and herbs I know will work with the meal so feel free to make your own variation up!

This recipe as I mentioned in my previous fitness post is not quite perfect but let me know if you try it out and what you think?

So I am obsessed with peppers so clearly my first ingredient was going to be a pepper - red peppers are my favourite! I may mix it up next time and use different peppers and see how it changes the sauce.

Also cayenne pepper as it adds a kick to anything, which I love, and it increases your metabolism which we all love! There are so many more health benefit claims to cayenne pepper so I recommend adding it to some of your meals... I always add a tad to my soups, or a lot if I fancy a spicy meal!

I added my sauce to some wholewheat pasta - I didn't measure it out but I used to do 50g - with chicken, lots of peppers and mushrooms. One of my favourite go to dinners.

Ingredients:
One whole red pepper
1/2 red onion
Two large garlic cloves (or three little ones)
One chopped tomato tin
Oregano
Cayenne pepper
Thyme

Method:

Cook the onion and pepper first then let cool (and anything other veg you wish to add - we didn't add anymore veg in the sauce only the actual meal).

Then put everything in a blender and blend away until its the consistency you like - I used water to get all the juices out the tin but use whatever you wish!

NOTE
I would say this sauce serves three - but it does depend on how much sauce you like!

I kept the leftover sauce in the cup in the fridge for the next day - I made my dad try it (and he loved it) but I did add chilies into the sauce before serving it for him.

Obviously you can use actual tomatoes and not the tinned variety - I just don't actually like tomatoes so I don't buy them. If you are going to use whole ones, I recommend removing the skin and pips first to reduce the acidity.

I actually think alone (not that you would eat this alone but I tasted it) the recipe was to acid-y for my taste so I think next time I may use one whole small onion or maybe red wine instead of water or carrots - all of which should cancel out the strong taste. Or perhaps even trying 3/4 of a tin of tomatoes and not a whole one. With the actual meal and all other ingredients it was absolutely fine just as it was :)

POSITIVITY

Hi guys,

I'm back with another lifestyle type post - sorry for the lack of fashion and beauty lately, I'm still recovering from the flu (and will continue moaning about it until I'm finally better - sorry!)

So, this post came upon me today when I just got totally and utterly fed up with peoples negative vibes in my space. There's no need for it!

I know some people have negative thoughts towards themselves, which is a whole different post... But I mean those people who hate on others constantly. What is with those types of people? The ones who jump straight at negativity and hatred rather than listening to an explanation or caring for the situation the person is in. I DO NOT GET IT. GO AWAY.

So here's to positivity;

"If you cannot be positive, then at least be quiet"

I do have a quotes board on my Pinterest if you wanted to check it out and follow for more :) here.

Share the love - radiate joy - be kind - give - teach -  inspire - smile - its all infectious

Day 9 - fitness journey: juicing and blending

Hi everyone,

How are you all doing? Are the health and fitness journeys going well? Let me know in the comments below (or feel free to privately message me if you would prefer that).

You can always reach me on my blog or any of my social media websites (links are all on the right of my blog) if you wanted to chat about anything!

Ok, so this post is really a question I wanted to ask you all. I have so much information to share on health and fitness it is so hard to even know where to start - so in fact I thought I would come and ask you what sorts of things you would like to read about first?

I started with whole grains as I think this is such an important factor for a healthy diet. But now I get down to writing more posts I can’t decide where to start.

Let me know!

Juicing and Blending

I’ve had a few people ask me about my personal fitness journey and specifically about the smoothies I am attempting.
I have brought and used my blender already, so I am going to try and post smoothie recipes soon, as well as soup recipes and sauce recipes (I will be doing frozen smoothies and cocktails in the summer with it as well... A bubble gum daiquiri is a must try!)

I am also tempted to buy a juicer so I can post recipes on those too - what do you guys think?
I am going to post the general benefits of the ingredients I use and why the combination works - but you're going to have to bare with me guys as I am new to all of this as well… I will post my (not perfect) recipes up and let you know what I think needs changing and see if together we can come up with the perfect combinations!

Remember, we are looking for the healthy, balanced lifestyle not a quick fix and I don’t recommend replacing all your meals with juices and smoothies!

FAQ - What is the difference between juicing and blending?

So basically;

A juicer extracts all the fibre from the fruit and vegetables that you put into it. It doesn’t require much from your digestive system in getting the nutrients and enzymes into the right places as its consistency is the same of water. The ratio of 3 veg : 1 fruit works best as fruit contains a lot of sugars.
A smoothie is made in the blender and uses the whole of the fruit and vegetables that you put into it with all of the fibre. Smoothies are much better for breakfast or for filling you up – the combination here is so important.

Fitness fashion!

Hi everyone,

So as you know if you read my blog, I have been planning to do this post for a while now but with soooooooo much sports fashion out there I didn't even know where to start. But I have decided to take the plunge and do my first fitness fashion post - there will be many more to come!

Firstly, I have to say whether going to the gym, or a class or just doing exercise at home, the important thing is to be comfortable; but as they say - when you look good, you feel good!

I am forever posting fitness pictures on my Instagram and Tumblr so I'm sure you've all seen half my fitness clothes anyway, so I thought I would go and find some bits which I personally would love to buy or will be buying soon.

I am a huge fan of Nike and Adidas but they are both so expensive! I do occasionally buy products from them and will always recommend them to people - I mean I suppose you get what you pay for - but here in the UK the prices are a little too high for me to buy everything I would like to from them, especially when I am trying so hard to save for a house!

However - I do think that investing in some good (possibly expensive) trainers are so worth it. It is really important to wear solid shoes so you don't hurt yourself. My Nike free runs are the best trainers ever and I so recommend them, particularly if you like running. There are so many different types of trainers depending on what activities you intend on participating in - so do speak to the sale associate in the store and try them on.

As we all constantly see (on Tumblr etc) there are thousands of amazing Nike shoes out there but they are a little pricey, especially for the customised ones. I would say try searching in outlets before taking the leap and ordering hugely expensive ones - some of my friends have got perfectly nice trainers from the Freeport outlet at literally a third of the price to what you can pay.

I love these free runs and this colour theme...

Getting a good sports bra is also so important for women. I personally love the Nike medium support sports bras and do intend on buying this one from Sports Direct (which is another shop I recommend you checking out - they always have great deals on these expensive brands).

The new Missguided active range has got me so excited!!!!!!!!!! I literally cannot wait to purchase half their collection! It's so beautiful and totally affordable.

"Missguided Active is here. Empowering and confident, we’re not here to be average, we’re here to make you look awesome and encourage you to train insane with our brand new and exclusive sportswear collection." - Lanching not next week but the one after (yay!)

(I got these photos from Twitter)

Additionally, many other affordable 'high street' shops such as New Look and Boohoo are also planning on launching ranges for spring 2015 so keep your eyes peeled everyone!

I must also mention H&M quickly; this jacket is only £24.99 which is such a bargain! I know quite a few people who have brought leggings and sports bras from H&M and have not been disappointed!

I have to say it is hard to choose what sizes to get for sports clothing (I recommend trying them on if you are in store) but don't be afraid to go for Missguided and Boohoo - they both have free easy return services! Obviously, most actual stores will let you return straight to the store but not always so make sure to check returns services before ordering from any website.

On a final note, most of my workout tops are totally random (because who really walks around in just leggings and a sports bra!!) - I have two Nike vests, two Jack Wills vests, two random ones and then the rest are simply Primark vests; which I totally recommend! You can grab just plain vests for about £2 so when you're spending loads on your trainers you can remember you're saving with the tops! WIN WIN.

Hope everyone's fitness journey's are going well if you are joining me!

PS. I have a 'fitness fashion' board with loads on pins on pinterest - go check it out: Pinterest

Day 4 - fitness journey: whole grain food

Hi everyone,

How are you all getting on so far? (I'm still stuck in bed ill - boooooo).

I thought I would do today's post on whole grain foods - this post may be obvious to some people but it may not be to others. I must first point out I'm not a nutritionist so the wording might not be perfect but I'm trying to explain everything in terms I can actually understand and hopefully you all can too!

As I mentioned on day one here, I will be doing all sorts of posts over our journey together, going through different food groups and types of food, as well as doing meal recipes, snack recipes and smoothies (etccccc). So stay tuned :) remember this is not a quick fix but a long term journey - so it doesn't matter if we learn things from each other today, or if we don't learn anything new until day 20 - we are all going to have our own individual journeys and that's perfectly ok!

So I first recommend to you that you cut out all the 'white food' - white bread, white rice, white pasta...

I know that for those who eat this type of food everyday it will be super hard but trust me, it will be so worth it!

I am not saying just throw it all away and replace it with food that states 'whole grain' this, that and the other, although that might be the approach that some of you would rather take. But for others it might be easier to start of by having half white rice and half brown rice until you get used to the flavour - I know this is the approach I took years ago when I went from the "green" semi-skimmed milk to the "red" skimmed milk and it really worked for me. I now think that semi-skimmed milk is disgusting (when I previously thought the opposite). It really is true that you can train your body to like different foods or drinks, so we can do this together with a bit of determination and willpower!

To be perfectly honest, I can't even taste that much difference between the two (unless it is fresh bread or pasta but I don't know anyone that always buys it fresh) - you could still have these products as a treat but just not every single day for every single meal as I know some people do!

The health benefits
Whole grains have lots of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals (fiber, magnesium, B vitamins etc) which have huge health benefits such as reducing heart disease and obesity (there are so many claims - I could go on and on with this point).

White bread, pasta etc are refined carbohydrates which can be just as bad as those sugary foods we all try and avoid. These types of carbs are rapidly broken down into simple sugars which are absorbed into the bloodstream, causing spikes in our blood insulin levels. When this happens we get that lul, that sugary low from being on such a high - causing fatigue, tiredness and wanting to eat more.

Hence, not only is whole grain better for you, it makes you feel fuller for longer and stops you from reaching for more food, it has that slow energy release we need from food.

We (this point definitely includes myself) need to try and think about food as fueling our body and not just grabbing chocolate because we think it will make us feel better. Changing our mind sets will be super hard but hopefully we can all do it together!

Some whole grain food ideas
Breakfast
Whole grain bran flakes
Oatmeal/porridge
Whole grain toast and scrambled egg

Lunch
Whole grain toast and soup
Whole grain sandwich
Whole grain pasta salad
Whole grain rice and chicken dish

Dinner
Pretty self-explanatory - replace your white rice or pasta with whole grain
Try having sweet potato occasionally - which are good baked as fries (will do this recipe another day)

And remember we are looking to create a balanced diet; we want to have permanent healthy lifestyles :)

HOW TO: stop coughing at night

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my most utterly random post to date!

Now, if you've read my previous fitness post or follow me on Twitter (I apologise) you'll know I've been stuck in bed with the flu for almost a week now.

I have obviously been doing all the usual things to help me get better - resting, drinking 'lots' of water, trying to eat plain foods, taking flu tablets and paracetamol, as well as cough syrup medicine and those longueurs when needed.

But last night my dad came into my room and bluntly suggested that I rub vic onto my feet.

My first reaction was to laugh (and then cough) in his face.

He then went on to tell me that he can't sleep because I keep coughing in the night... I knew I had a little cough along with this flu but I didn't realise I coughed that much at night.

Anyway, so I thought I'd hear him out because my parents don't deserve not to sleep when it's me that's ill.

He told me that if I rub vic (the vapo rub) on my feet and put socks over that (and put vic on my chest and all the usual places) I shouldn't cough as much in the night.

So I thought to myself well why not, it can't do any damage. I will do anything to get better already!!

Anyway, I woke up this morning feeling so much stronger. Now it could be a huge coincidence but how weird is that!

Apparently he didn't hear me cough at all and I do feel as if I have had a much better sleep (I knew I wasn't sleeping as normal but I didn't think I was having that much trouble at night).

He informed me that it works for him when he gets a cough and he has told numerous people to do it and it has also worked for them. It might not stop you coughing completely but it might help you cough less.

So hopefully, I'll be back up on my feet soon posting lots of fashion pictures and joining in properly on my/our fitness journey!

It might not work for everyone, but why not give it a try?

Let me know if anyone has heard of this before (I certainly haven't) or if you have tried this before?

Hope you feel better soon if you are ill !

Day 1 - fitness journey

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a great new year and are ready to begin the healthiest and fittest year of our lives!

Here begins our journey - DAY 1 - PREP.

I'm starting off by saying this is not going to be a diet plan or any form of short term fix; this is a lifestyle change.

Although I'm relatively healthy I know there is a lot more I could be doing to help my body. For instance, I do not eat fruit - I try all sorts of fruit throughout the years (over and over) and I just don't like it, something about the texture makes me gag... so here I am, doing this to try and push past all my weaknesses and become the healthiest I have ever been. I hope some of you will join me and we can help each other push past barriers and become our healthiest ever!

I have to state that for this month only, I am attempting to remove chocolate and biscuits from my diet because I'm far too reliant on them! When I feel rubbish or simply stressed about something I go for the sugary food - which as we all know will actually make me feel worse not better. Additionally, it has just been Christmas so my intake of sugar and fat has been far too high - hence my recent breakouts and my weakened immune system. However, the aim here is to just break this relationship - I'm not going to give up sugar or carbs or anything forever - it's all about balance.

Of course, along with trying to create a healthy balanced diet I will also be going to the gym as usual and if I manage to get some abs by the end of the year too, I will of course be even happier!

But the real main aim is just to be healthy - to improve my energy levels, my skin, my fitness etc etc - it's not about a simply physical change but an emotional one too.

We are all going to have moments of weakness where we just can't resist that bar of chocolate or whatever it may be but that's ok. It really doesn't matter. Don't feel guilty when a cheat meal turns into a cheat day or two. It's ok. Its not a short term diet but a lifestyle for us to adopt forever. Just get back on it and follow this journey with me. It's not going to be an easy one but we can do it together!

The important thing is to never loose focus. Mix it up. Try new classes at the gym - I know at my gym the classes vary from session to session or have a new plan after a few weeks which is great for keeping focused. Additionally, you don't need to be eating chicken, rice and veg everyday as you see in half those meal prep pictures  - keep mixing it up and trying new things - keep it fun! I will be trying lots of different smoothies and soups (and other foods, like my clean-fudge-brownies) so follow me and you can try them all with me and share your tips and ideas too!

It doesn't matter what stage you are at now, with a positive mental attitude we can do it!

Start now by taking your before photos in your undies or bikinis (one front on and one side on) and also by getting a measuring tape and measuring parts of your body (especially the biggest part of your belly and your waist) and also weigh yourself and write this all down.

I will be joining in with this soon - I'm currently in bed with the flu but I wasn't going to disappoint any of you! (or myself) but not starting today as well.

I must add here, don't be disheartened if you weigh yourself everyday and it doesn't change - for most people the work you put in this month doesn't reveal itself until next month so keep at it. Last year my weight didn't change much but I did loose a couple inches off my stomach (which by looking in the mirror I couldn't believe - I looked exactly the same to me) so get your diary out and write everything down and this time next month we will do it again... And so on.

There's no quick fix to loosing weight and getting that perfect body but I will be experimenting with different things (smoothies, protein shakes, teatoxes, etc) and letting you know what really helps. Although, never forget that everyone's different. I don't believe in any of these fad diets where you replace meals with shakes or anything... That's not a lifestyle change.

Right, I also promised to share some fashion tips for the gym! So I'll post just a couple of photos here but I'll do actual fitness fashion posts over our time together. Basically, just wear whatever you are comfortable in. Nike trainers are super comfortable; my free runs are my favourites. I also love the support given from the medium support nike sports bras but it probably depends on the size of your boobs to what type of support you need.

This is the blender I have brought for my smoothies: found on amazon at such a bargain.

Last weekend, I was too excited about trying my blender me and my boyfriend just grabbed all the fruit in the house to use (strawberries, grapes and bananas) and it was lovely! So you really can use anything... I have heard adding coconut water and spinach to be good but I will post different smoothie recipes throughout our journey. I am also going to a class on smoothies this Saturday so I'll let you all know how that goes as well and what recipes I found the best.

If you ever need any help along the way please don't hesitate to comment on this post or message me on Twitter or any other social platform - I'll reply as soon as I can. We are in this together and we will all need help I'm sure!

As I mentioned I am poorly but I am forcing myself to eat today as I need to get better so I can join you all properly at the start of this fitness journey.

These are the meals I have had so far:

Breakfast: porridge oats and cinnamon
Lunch: vegetable soup and cayenne pepper

I recommend everyone has breakfast. Oats are great for the morning as they give energy and cinnamon is a good spice. If you have more time, wholewheat toast with scrambled eggs on in a great choice or if you are in a hurry a smoothie might work best! Soup is obviously a good choice for lunch and cayenne pepper helps to boost the metabolism; along with green tea... I drink lots of teas and water throughout the day - I aim to drink 3L of water a day... I take 1.5L to work and make sure I drink it all so I can keep better track of what I'm drinking - lemon water is a great alternative. But I'll do lots more posts specifically on breakfast foods, lunch, dinners, spices etc etc throughout our journey!

I feel this post is already long enough for the day!
